started with good intentions of learning Portuguese, now it just collects dust

I was annoyed to find I had wasted my money - there is no indication, until you actually read the book, that this is for Brazillian Portuguese and that it is totally different from Portuguese Portuguese, so no use at all for a holiday in Portugal!A mention of this on the cover or description would have saved me time, money and disappointment.

Although this is a good pocket sized introduction to Portuguese, written in the familiar "Dummies" style, with a practical approach, good pronunciation guide and useful tips and information clearly identified, I had to return it as it wasn't what the cover and description led me to believe it was. It's important to point out that although the description mentions travelling to Brazil or Portugal, it's really for Brazilian Portuguese. The larger version of this book mentions this fact fairly obviously on the front cover but for some reason this one doesn't.Within the first chapter, the author says that while the written forms of Portuguese are pretty much interchangeable, the pronunciation differences mean that the spoken versions are not, and all the pronunciation and cultural information in this book focuses on Brazilian Portuguese, with the result that this is not going to be a particularly useful book for a holiday in the Algarve!

This is a reasonable book if you are going to BRAZIL, this is not Euro-portugese and it does say that in the preface. Words are similar but pronunciation is not. Should be an interesting trip to Madeira.

I bought this book to help me when I was visiting my friend in Brazil. He had a look at it and couldn't stop laughing. There are quite a few phrases and pronunciations which don't actually exist!
